Why are 'Foreigners' so alluring?

Yesterday, Nick Odhiambo was filling in for Maina Kageni. Nick and Mwalimu Kingangi were talking about how Kenyan women compare Kenyan men to foreign men and in most cases the Kenyan man falls short. So why is 'foreign' so alluring?

My Human Opinion

A man is a man. A relationship is a relationship. Be it with a foreigner or not, your relationship will still require work for it to survive.

It isn't bad to compare though. In fact, you should. But what you should be looking for in the man are his qualities, the overall man, not just the fact he is a foreigner—or not.

Methinks 'foreigner' could mean many things. To a shagz mondoz, an urbanite could be a foreigner. To an eastlander, a westlander could be a foreigner. To a committed Christian, a hard-drinking party-animal could be a foreigner. I don't know. Just thinking aloud.

I have seriously digressed.

We wanted to find out why foreign men appear so alluring. (I say appear because, again, a man is a man). Here are some of the common reasons
  • Reason numero uno is economic. Most foreigner men especially from the US and Europe generally have deeper pockets than eh, the average Kenyan male. Apparently, these men are also generous with their money, unlike certain Kenyan men who are said to be very stingy to a fault.
  • Romance. This is the deal breaker. Any man can get money. But romance! Women, not just Kenyan women, want—need to be romanced. She needs to feel special. She needs to be constantly wooed, to feted with gifts and attention (both in private and in public). And then more. Besides, life is more interesting and fairy-tale-like with someone who has different experiences and background than yours. A Kenyan man will most likely not see the point.
  • Grooming. This can be tied to the economic point. Anyway, foreign men are generally better groomed i.e better dressed, better smelling
Anyway, ladies, when all is said and done, take care as you search for your foreign man. Please recall the cases of njyes slaves in Europe, hard labour in Saudi Arabia, you get the drift.

My Biblical Opinion

In the Old Testament times, God forbade the Israelites from intermarrying with the people of the nations around them. The reason wasn't primarily racial or 'foreigner' in nature. Rather is was because these people worshiped idols and would eventually lead the Israelites astray.
2 Corinthians 6:14
"Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?"

I have mentioned Samson and Delilah severally on this blog. Delilah wasn't an Israelite, and you know what happened to Samson due to his hookup with Delicious.

Another famous example is Wise King Solomon. The wisest man who ever lived, yet—
1 Kings 11: 1-4
1 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

Basically, what God forbids in His Word is NOT the marrying of people of different skin colors or other characteristics, but marriage where one person worships God and the other person either does not and/or actively believes and worships a FALSE god.

Finally, Jesus said that a prophet is without honor at home. So Kenyan men, it's not a new phenomenon that some Kenyan women prefer foreign men. But are you a prophet? Don't answer.
Mark 6: 4-5  Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
That's all for today, friends. See you next week. Have an awesome weekend.
