Kenyan men, what qualities do you look for in a woman?

Today Maina and Kingangi flipped yesterday's topic and asked the Kenyan men what they looked for in a woman. Mwalimu emphasized on appreciation. Let's discuss.

My Human Opinion

Well, like yesterday's topic, it's impossible to give a definite response. Each man has his own qualities that he wishes to find in a woman. However, we can safely say that there are a number of qualities that most men want in a woman, though the exact combination of qualities is a varied as the stars in the sky.

Haiya, here is my non-exhaustive, cross-generation, cross-cultural  list.
  • Men look for health. Methinks this is the most important quality. Men instinctively want a woman who is healthy physically, psychologically, emotionally and socially (nowadays even financially).
    • For physical health, they look for a woman with clear bright eyes, lustrous and thick hair, smooth glowing skin(unblemished skin is a plus), a body that is not too overweight nor too underweight (some say that a woman with a waist which is 70% the size of the hips is the best indicator of health and is also the most visually attractive). Anyway, physical beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
    • For behavioral healthiness, men look for a woman who is trustworthy, loyal, honest (do you know this list can go on for ever?), intelligent or at least the upstairs is functioning normally, a positive personality, etc
  • Men want a woman who appreciates his job, regardless of the job and his contribution in the home, regardless of the contribution. Here, I totally agree with Kingangi. Most women may want to call this massaging his ego, but hey, that's want a man wants his woman to do. And those who do are usually rewarded very highly. You may want to ask some mistresses if still in doubt.
  • Men want a woman who will a make an effort to please him. It's not enough to leave certain things for the hired help.
  •  Men want a woman who is caring and nurturing. All men want a who can and is willing to take care of him and his children.
  • Men want a woman who shares similar interests. So if your man likes Manchester United...
  • Men want what they cannot have. Remember David and Bathsheba?
  • Men want a woman who will challenge and motive him to reach his fullest potential.
  • Men want an intelligent woman, not necessarily book smart. But a woman who can hold a decent converstation and knows that there were two different US presidents called George Bush.
  • Men want a woman who is comfortable with her sexuality and is willing and able to get freaky in the bedroom.
  • Men want a woman with a sense of humour, a nice smile, a infectious laugh and who loves to laugh (at his jokes??)
  • Men want a Godly woman (even if they themselves may not be)
  • Men want...
We could go on for ever. Please feel free to add more qualities but let's see what the Bible says we should look out for.

My Biblical Opinion

Men, when looking for a wife, have a list of a must-have quality or qualities, then be one the look out for the woman who has that quality(ies) and leave the rest to God. Therefore choose your quality well.

When Abraham was looking for a wife for his son Isaac, the only condition he had was that she should not be from the Canaanites but from his own country.
Genesis 24
3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac."
Similarly when the servant reached the town of Nahor, he also was one the look out for a woman with one quality.
Genesis 24 12 Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that when I say to a girl, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too'-let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."
In the same way a woman should test a man's qualities, a man should test the woman's qualities. Rebbecca proved to be a caring and nurturing woman ready to serve even a total stranger (and his animals too).

Now, you know where we are heading next, don't you?

Proverbs 31:10-31 A Portrait of a Godly Woman

       Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
 10 A wife of noble character who can find?
       She is worth far more than rubies.
 11 Her husband has full confidence in her
       and lacks nothing of value.
 12 She brings him good, not harm,
       all the days of her life.
 13 She selects wool and flax
       and works with eager hands.
 14 She is like the merchant ships,
       bringing her food from afar.
 15 She gets up while it is still dark;
       she provides food for her family
       and portions for her servant girls.
 16 She considers a field and buys it;
       out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
 17 She sets about her work vigorously;
       her arms are strong for her tasks.
 18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
       and her lamp does not go out at night.
 19 In her hand she holds the distaff
       and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
 20 She opens her arms to the poor
       and extends her hands to the needy.
 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
       for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
 22 She makes coverings for her bed;
       she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
       where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
 24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
       and supplies the merchants with sashes.
 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
       she can laugh at the days to come.
 26 She speaks with wisdom,
       and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
 27 She watches over the affairs of her household
       and does not eat the bread of idleness.
 28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
       her husband also, and he praises her:
 29 "Many women do noble things,
       but you surpass them all."
 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
       but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
 31 Give her the reward she has earned,
       and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Again, feel free to add to the list.

We don't know what you are looking for in a woman. But God does. See you tomorrow
