Unemployment Forces Generations to Clash Over Bride Price in Kenya
Bride price, the sum a husband pays his wife’s family in order to marry her, is a tradition in many African communities. Yet a high unemployment rate among Kenya's youth is forcing many young men to stay single, cohabit or marry outside their cultures because they can’t afford the bride price. A bill that would make bride price optional has been pending in Parliament since 2007, but many say it will never pass.
